Separation anxiety is a real problem faced by dogs as well as their owners. In simple terms, this refers to the dogs acting out when they fear their guardians are about to leave them to go outside. Many families that have adopted a new pet during the Covid-19 lockdown order will face this issue when they finally start going out to their work or schools. You would need to teach your dog the idea that there will be times when you are not with them, but you will always come back.

Symptoms of Separation Anxiety

Dogs express their anxiety in various ways. By learning to identify these symptoms, dog owners like yourself can understand your dog’s emotional condition better and begin to help them get over their issues. Below are some key signs that your dog is suffering from separation anxiety.

Mix up with the family

Your dog’s attachment with you alone and dependency on you alone is not healthy. If you live in a family, then make your dog socialize and be friendly with all the various members of your family. This way, whenever you are away from your home, the dog will feel comforted knowing that other members of your family are with it to care for it. It will reduce the feeling of abandonment and also reduce the separation anxiety in the dog. 

Create a safe space

Set up a safe space within your home for your dog where it can spend some time when you are not home. You can keep all your dog’s favorite toys there to make it feel comfortable. You can even place an automated treat dispenser in that area to keep your dog happy and calm here. 

Give it some alone time

Your dog needs to learn how to be alone. Start leaving your dog for alone for short periods of time to let it get used the idea of being alone. Keep these practice alone time sessions short so that the dog does not start showing signs of anxiety. 

Exercise is always good

Give your dog proper physical exercise as that also benefits the mental health. Take your dog for walks and play fetch with them on a regular basis. Regular exercise increases the energy level in the dog. Energetic dogs are generally happier in nature and are less prone to the anxiety of any kind.
